1996 // OPEN PROJECT
Okay. Let's try something different.
We spent a long time figuring out what 1996 sounded like to us.
Now we're opening the project and letting you show us what it sounds like to you.
We're giving you access to the Suno material behind the song — the experiments, alternate directions, and pieces of the process that eventually became the version we released.
One rule: keep the singer.
Everything else is yours.
Change the genre. Change the arrangement. Make it heavier. Make it quieter. Make it acoustic. Make it dance. Make it strange. Follow something we abandoned. Take it somewhere we never thought to go.
Don't make our version better. Make your version.
We'll listen to every submission and choose 20 of our favorites.
Each finalist gets their own Set to 88 spotlight before we turn the decision over to everyone else.

The 1996 // OPEN PROJECT is a creative remix project hosted by Set to 88.

CONTEST PERIOD
The Open Project officially begins August 19, 2026 and submissions close September 17, 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Time.
A limited number of invited creators may receive early access beginning August 17, 2026. Early access does not guarantee selection or provide any advantage in judging.
HOW TO ENTER
Use the official 1996 Suno project made available by Set to 88 to create your own interpretation of “1996.”
When you're finished, submit the link to your version through the official submission form on this page before the deadline.

ORIGINAL WORK
Your submission must represent your own creative work using materials made available through the 1996 // OPEN PROJECT.
Do not introduce samples, recordings, compositions, lyrics, voices, or other copyrighted material that you do not have permission to use.
OWNERSHIP
Entering the Open Project does not transfer ownership of your original creative contributions to Set to 88.
Set to 88 retains all rights it already holds in “1996” and the materials supplied for the Open Project.
Participation does not grant entrants ownership of the original “1996” composition, lyrics, recording, vocal identity, or other Set to 88 materials.
PERMISSION TO FEATURE YOUR SUBMISSION
By entering, you give Set to 88 permission to play, display, repost, promote, and create reasonable promotional excerpts from your submitted version in connection with the 1996 // OPEN PROJECT.
This permission also includes displaying the creator/artist name and social-media handle you provide with your submission.
This permission does not transfer ownership of your original creative contribution to Set to 88.
THE FINAL 20
After submissions close, Set to 88 will select up to 20 favorite interpretations to participate in the public showcase.
These are our favorites—not a claim that they are objectively the “best” submissions.
Creativity, musicality, originality, interpretation, and the overall idea may all be considered.
Each selected finalist may receive an individual Set to 88 social-media feature as part of the showcase.
COMMUNITY VOTING
The selected finalists will advance to a public community vote.
Voting dates and instructions will be announced after finalists are selected.
Artificial, automated, purchased, fraudulent, or otherwise manipulated votes may be removed. Set to 88 reserves the right to disqualify an entry when there is reasonable evidence of vote manipulation or abuse.
THE 10 COMMUNITY FAVORITES
Up to 10 community favorites will receive a Set to 88 shirt.
Available styles and sizes may vary. Winners may be required to provide shipping information for prize fulfillment. No cash alternative is guaranteed. Prizes will only be shipped within the US.
NO GUARANTEED RELEASE OR COLLABORATION
Participation, promotion, finalist selection, or winning does not guarantee an official Set to 88 release, recording agreement, publishing agreement, collaboration, payment, or future business relationship.
If we hear something that makes us want to work with you again, we'll contact you separately.
PLATFORM RULES
Participants are responsible for following Suno's current terms and the rules of any other platform used to create, host, publish, or share their submission.
ELIGIBILITY
Participants must be at least 18 years old or participate with the permission of a parent or legal guardian where permitted.
The Open Project is void where prohibited by law.
CHANGES OR CANCELLATION
Set to 88 may modify, suspend, extend, or cancel the Open Project if technical problems, platform changes, abuse, or circumstances outside our reasonable control prevent the project from operating as intended.
Any material changes will be posted on this page.
BY SUBMITTING
You confirm that you have read and agree to these rules, that you have the right to submit your creative contribution, and that you grant Set to 88 the promotional permissions described above.
